7. Origins – how you came to be

A message for my grandson. Have you ever wondered how you got to be here on this planet? It’s worth thinking about.

A Family Tree will put your life in perspective and show some of the people (forbearers – those who came before you) in your line of ancestors who lived before you and made your existence possible.

Your Family Tree becomes your guide to history. It’s like your own stepping stones backwards through time through the lives of your forbearers.

The story of your Great Great Grandmothers is very interesting. These women were born over 100 years ago

Their lives were the history that we study today (sometimes called ‘the Olden Days’). They lived through World War I and World War II.

During your Great Great Mothers time, they went from this

They lived during the time when:

  • Popular ways of travel were walking, bike riding, horse drawn  cart, public transport – train or bus
  • Cars were not common. Only wealthy people could afford them
  • There were no computers, Facebook, internet, eBay or computer gaming.
  • Telephones were in use, but considered a luxury item.
  • Communication was by letter which was posted at the local Post Office to be delivered to the addressee some days later.
  • There was no e-mail or instant text
  • Electricity was slowly being installed. Most people relied on candles and oil lamps.
  • Only a small number of children went to school after 14 years of age
to the development of Bullet Trains

They lived long enough to see:

  • Cheap electricity widely available for heating, cooling and lighting
  • Mobile phones becoming more and more popular
  • Previously regarded luxury items now common and affordable for most – vacuum cleaners, fridges, micro waves, mobile phones overseas travel
  • Very fast bullet trains.
  • Supersonic air travel common
  • Automobile most common form of travel and affordable by anyone
  • Mind boggling road transport system with km of sealed roads crisscrossing countries
  • Instant communication and internet widely available for the majority of the people
  • Big leap in the quest for humans to travel in space in re-usable rocket ships
  • Comprehensive education till 18 years of age and beyond
  • Solar electricity allowing individuals to produce enough power for their use

Like your Great-Great Grandmothers, you are living in a world which will be the history of the future.

These women lived through tough times and their ability to endure hardship resulted in an ancestral line where you have come into being.

That is your privilege of life.

As you grow and acquire wisdom you become increasingly responsible for the consequences that you experience. You have an opportunity to do something with your life.

The choice is yours.

You have been given the privilege of life. You exist.

The choice is yours to make.

You can be a Spectator where you just plod along and let the opportunities pass you by. You don’t have to work too hard. You just cruise along.

You can choose to be a Victim where you blame everything and everyone for the consequences in your life. “It’s not my fault” thinking.

Or you can choose to be Victorious where you take responsibility for the consequences of your actions and in-actions. Victorious people are aware of the benefits of hard twork.

They know that hard work breeds success.

The gift that you have is existence.

What will you do with this Gift of Life?

After an extensive career in education, retired on medical grounds in 2016. I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2005 and set a goal to work till July, 2012. Then, I went on leave until my official retirement. In my various roles, I dealt with a range of parents, their aspirations for their children and students of a variety of ages. I also engaged with many teachers and colleagues and reflected on the strategies that worked and didn't work. This is the basis of my legacy.
